Steve Howe‘s passion for the guitar is legendary, as is his collection of fine instruments. But it is the beautiful Gibson ES-175 with which he is most closely associated, having coaxed so many classic Yes moments from its strings. And so when he picked up that iconic instrument during the hustle and bustle of Yestival 2017 summer tour rehearsals, we felt compelled to reach for a classic instrument of our own: the formidable Leica M3, which has frequently been called the greatest camera of all-time.
Okay, so maybe this is more of a quick snap than a future classic photo. Jim Marshall has nothing to envy here. But we still like the slightest hint of a kindly, indulgent grin on Steve’s face and the twinkle in his eye as he humored us for yet another photo.
We’re often asked, “How many photos do you need?” (Mostly we’re asked this by members of our own family).
But when it comes to photographing Yes, we’re forever chasing the impossible: an image that conveys the magnitude of the emotion and love we have for this music.
We’ve now been photographing Yes since earnest, for almost four decades. We’re still in search of that perfect photo that captures all that Yes means to us, in just 1/250th of second. We’ll let you know when we make it.
