Yes (Steve Howe, Alan White, Geoff Downes, Billy Sherwood, Jon Davison, with special guests Tony Kaye and Jay Schellen) brought their stellar fiftieth anniversary tour to the north eastern U.S. with a stop in Pennsylvania ski country at beautiful Penn’s Peak in Jim Thorpe, PA. What a great place to see a show! The sound, the staff and the location were all fantastic. And Yes were performing a truly special set list, drawing heavily from their classic 70s treasure trove.
Standouts however, included 1999’s “Nine Voices,” which showcased Jon Davison’s shimmering, crystal clear vocals and wonderful percussion alongside Steve Howe’s lush, signature Portuguese guitar work. Steve and Geoff Downes featured prominently in a stellar arrangement and performance of 1969’s “Sweet Dreams.”
The rhythm section were a force throughout the evening with Billy Sherwood and Jay Schellen running “Heart of the Sunrise” at full, glorious gallop. Alan White joined the band later in the set to propel them through a powerful and magnificent rendition of “Awaken.”
And Tony Kaye lit up the room (including the band!) with smiles all around, for a batch of high energy closing numbers.
#YES50 is in full swing. We’ll have more posts soon!
